We caught up with Nathan Wallace, our Junior Assembly Technician to learn more about his apprenticeship journey and to hear some helpful tips for those considering a similar route.

Why did you decide to be an apprentice?
An apprenticeship was an opportunity for me to keep learning while earning money and also build my skills and reputation with a company.

Tell us a bit more about the apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are a great way to gain hands-on experience in a particular field while also learning the theory behind it. The apprenticeship I completed was in Mechantronics, which combines mechanical and electronic engineering.

During the course, I was able to learn a variety of creative skills including Design and CAD (Computer Aided Design), hand fitting (working with hand tools to create a product to drawing), Machining, and Welding. I was able to complete this apprenticeship by spending 4 days a week at work and Wednesdays at college, which was a nice balance. The practical work was backed up by graded assignments and knowledge based questions. This was a great way for me to gain knowledge and practical experience in the field of Mechantronics.

What advice would you give to younger people looking to get into work?
When looking to get into work, my advice would be to focus on gaining experience and building your skillset. Take the time to research available opportunities and be proactive in applying for those that best align with your interests and goals. Apply to a few places at once with a CV that includes your skills and achievements and anything you think you could bring to a team. Don't be afraid to apply to places even if you don't think you have all the right qualifications or experience - you can often learn on the job and bring something new and valuable to the team.

Lastly, don't be too focused on money or hours, chase your dream. Work your way up and fill your CV with new experiences and knowledge. Most of all, put your all into your work and the rewards will follow.

What is the best thing about working at Belvoir Rail?
The best thing about working at Belvoir Rail is the people. It's great to know that you can rely on the support, help and advice of your colleagues and friends if you need it. It's fantastic that everyone can get along so well and have a laugh, but also be highly productive and efficient when it comes to getting the job done. It's a great environment to be a part of!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy watching tv and relaxing however, my main hobby is writing and perform my own music and releasing it on all major streaming platforms.

Nathan started his journey with Belvoir Rail through an apprenticeship and is now a permanent and integral part of the Production Team.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to build skills, knowledge, and experience for rewarding long-term careers and for businesses, a great way to bring in fresh ideas, creativity and talent.
