Roundtable Discussion with East Midlands Mayoral Candidate

Our Managing Director, James Brown, recently participated in a roundtable discussion alongside Claire Ward, the candidate for East Midlands Mayor, as well as other suppliers and operators from the rail community.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for rail businesses based in or with a significant presence in the East Midlands to engage with Claire and explore local and national opportunities and challenges.

A central theme of the discussion focused on strategies to support more young people to join the rail industry. Recognising the importance of fostering opportunities for young individuals, especially those with practical and vocational skills but lacking an academic background. We sought to understand how an administration could address common barriers faced by young job seekers. These barriers include limited experience and the need for accessible pathways leading to meaningful employment.

James Brown, speaking after the meeting, emphasised the significance of connecting local businesses with emerging young talent. He stated, “It was a great opportunity to meet with the East Midlands Mayoral candidate and discuss strategies for bridging the gap between our industry and the next generation. I know there is more we can do to support the railway industry of tomorrow”.

Conversation also touched on shaping a positive image for the railway sector, positioning it as an appealing career choice. Acknowledging that more work remains to highlight the diverse array of career opportunities within the industry and foster its growth as a dynamic and inclusive environment.

The elections for the new Combined Authority Mayor will take place on 2 May 2024.
